10 Quotes from Parents About the Importance of Children’s Cancer Research

Our mission at CureSearch is to accelerate the search for cures for children’s cancer by driving innovation, transcending research barriers and solving the field’s most challenging problems.

We couldn’t take on this fight without our supportive “sidekick” parents. These parents believe in our innovative research approaches because they believe in finding a cure for the 43 children diagnosed with cancer each day.

Here are a few quotes from those parents:

1. Tabitha, Mother of Talia, 13 Years Old at Diagnosis, Ewing Sarcoma

“Our family can only hope that science will continue to progress. We know now that even if Talia is able to achieve remission, she will face a lifelong battle of ‘what if this comes back?’ We know now more than ever how important research and advancements are in regards to childhood cancer. Our hope through telling her story is that the world will continue to fund the search for a cure to end this disease.”

...even if Talia is able to achieve remission, she will face a lifelong battle of 'what if this comes back?'

2. Krista, Mother of Audrey, 10 Months Old at Diagnosis, Neuroblastoma

“When we began this journey with Audrey we met other families, 13 in fact, whose children had cancer. Today, only three of those kids are alive. Again, we need more funding because those children’s lives mattered, and the children who have come after them matter.”

3. Kristin, Mother of Connor, 20 Months Old at Diagnosis, Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT)

“Watching your child suffer the horrors of treatment in order to have a chance at life is something no parent should ever have to experience. Research is needed for less harsh treatments and better survival rates.”

4. Eric, father of Duncan, 2 and a Half Years Old at Diagnosis, Wilms Tumor

“I have now taken control of the situation and I can help fix things, and that rock is slowly being pieced back together because I chose to fight back the best way I know how – by supporting research. I am the chairperson for my local CureSearch Walk and I fight every single day by raising the funds necessary to find a cure.”

I chose to fight back the best way I know how – by supporting research.

5. Kathryn, Mother of Will, 4 and a Half Months Old at Diagnosis, Neuroblastoma

“The reason why research and raising awareness for funding is so important to us is simple; kids shouldn’t have cancer. Kids need to be out running, playing, exploring and making new friends. Doing what they do best. They shouldn’t be living in hospitals, being away from their friends/school or even family members. They shouldn’t feel sick all the time and lose their hair. They shouldn’t have to face long term affects like hearing loss or the ability to ever walk like my son Will. They shouldn’t have to fear going to the doctor because of the big scan machines and think “what if my cancer is back?” They shouldn’t ever have to ask their mommy and daddy if they are going to die? Cancer robs childhood lives. The money that is raised for research and raising awareness for pediatric funding can help a family one day not to have their child’s life robbed from cancer.”

They shouldn’t ever have to ask their mommy and daddy if they are going to die.

6. Jessica, Mother of Donnie, 16 Months Old at Diagnosis, Wilms Tumor

“I dream of the day when every child can be promised a cure. Yes, heroes come in all sizes, but the tiniest of heroes should be promised a full long life, too.”

7. Joe, Father of Sydney, 3 Years Old at Diagnosis, Philadelphia-Positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

“This experience has made us more aware of what others are dealing with and the need for further research for pediatric cancers. We are committed to helping CureSearch in their research efforts.”

8. Lauren, Mother of Gage, 3 Years Old at Diagnosis, Inoperable Spinal Ewing Sarcoma

“Since cancer mutates, I believe the answer won’t be one single treatment so supporting an organization that searches for the most promising cures nationally and internationally is important.”

...Supporting an organization that searches for the most promising cures nationally and internationally is important.

9. Jacki, Mother of Harlan, 2 Years Old at Diagnosis, Brain Cancer

“It does exist and it’s all around us – every one of us. Get out of your bubble and fight for OUR children. Pediatric cancer is different from adult cancers. There are 16 known major types of pediatric cancer and hundreds of subtypes. If OUR children are our future, then why are we not fighting harder to find cures for them?”

10. John, Father of Danielle, 2 Years Old at Diagnosis, Wilms Tumor

“Danielle’s oncologist pointed us toward CureSearch. After researching CureSearch’s mission and corresponding results, it quickly became clear that this was the single, biggest way for me to focus on beating cancer, not just for Danielle but for other kids like her.”
