When Doug Goldberg’s father passed away from cancer, Doug felt the urge to do something to honor his memory. He had often seen children receiving treatment for cancer in the hospital when he would visit his dad and was incredibly moved by their resilience. He couldn’t imagine keeping a smile on his face while receiving round after round of chemotherapy.
“After my father passed away, I knew that I had to do something to give back,” explains Doug. “When I thought back to his time in the hospital, I kept thinking about all the kids that I met along the way. Doing something for children with cancer seemed right.”
Doug started looking for organizations to help, and found CureSearch and the Ultimate Hike online. He was impressed with the program Ultimate Hike provided and thought it would be a great way to combine his love of hiking, get his family involved, and give back to children with cancer.
Doug didn’t want to do just any Ultimate Hike though; he wanted to do something completely out of the ordinary. He wanted to create his own adventure. After exploring several locations, he chose to hike in Ecuador, with the goal of celebrating on the summit of several Andean volcanoes.
Doug joined the Ultimate Hike Create Your Adventure program, which gave him access to training programs and support from CureSearch coaches and staff. He loved knowing that he had the tools necessary to be successful with fundraising and training.
His son Max and daughter Sara joined Doug in Ecuador getting ready for the big hike. To prepare, they had to take many smaller hikes, run stadium steps, and build up endurance to get used to the elevation. When the time for the adventure arrived, Doug and his children were nervous, but excited. They started hiking, and pushed through some difficult terrain, steep snow, and incredible scenery. All three reached the summit of Ruminahui at 15,088 feet, and Max persevered to the summit of Cotopaxi at 19,347. Doug was a little disappointed that he didn’t make it to the summit of Cotopaxi, but was proud to share the experience with his children and to raise money in his father’s memory for such a worthy cause.
Doug and his children had such a great time training, hiking, and fundraising for children with cancer that they are already thinking of their next adventure.
You too can create your own adventure with Ultimate Hike and join hundreds of other hikers who are fighting for a cure. Visit www.ultimatehike.org/adventure for more information.
