Freya Hurwitz Secures Gift from Her Employer to Help Families of Children with Cancer

Freya HurwitzMeet Freya Hurwitz, a Group Product Manager at TripAdvisor, a travel site that helps travelers plan and book fantastic trips. Freya is also a volunteer on the CureSearch Corporate Citizenship Council.

TripAdvisor recently awarded CureSearch $40,000 to support our CancerCare Mobile App. We asked Freya a few questions about how she made this gift happen:

Q. Why did TripAdvisor sponsor the CureSearch CancerCare mobile app?

A. The TripAdvisor Charitable Foundation funds the mobile app to make a difference in families’ lives when they receive a cancer diagnosis for one of their children. The Foundation’s mission is to “help strengthen human lives and communities around the world.” I can only imagine how upside down the world becomes when parents hear their child has cancer. This app provides some comfort in the chaos by helping parents keep track of all of the important information needed to provide the best outcome for their child.

CureSearch CancerCare AppQ. What was your role in making this partnership happen?

A. As an employee at TripAdvisor, I was able to sponsor the TripAdvisor Charitable Foundation grant application for CureSearch. I worked with the CureSearch team to define a project TripAdvisor could sponsor and then worked with our Charitable Foundation team to secure the grant.

Q. Why do you volunteer for CureSearch?

A. I volunteer for CureSearch because the thought of one of my children having cancer terrifies me. I can’t imagine what other parents go through, and to be a part of an organization that actively works to improve survival rates and treatment options for children’s cancer makes proud.

Q. What would you tell someone who wonders if their support would make a difference?

A. Every little bit can help – one researcher can have a huge breakthrough and save hundreds or thousands of lives. Those researchers are often not paid by their institutions. They depend on grants such as those made by CureSearch to do their research.

We want to thank Freya and TripAdvisor for supporting the CancerCare App and being part of the fight to end children’s cancer.
