How I Turned Impulse Shopping Into a Fight to End Children’s Cancer

Written by Mallory Zarate, Manager, Strategic Partnerships.

My time spent relaxing in front of the TV has become time spent watching it while playing on my iPad. Whether pinning new recipes or shopping online while watching the Thursday night line-up, doing one relaxing activity at a time doesn’t seem to cut it anymore – multitasking is the new way of life.

The convenience of being able to order things like toilet paper as soon as you notice it is running low is a godsend. I no longer need to brave the aisles of Target and risk coming out with three new nail polish colors, a $5 DVD that I’ll watch once, veggie chips and a case of La Croix when I went in for ONE THING.

The alternative is that every time an electronic device is in my hand and I see something I need (more likely, just want), I can have it magically appear outside my door in two business days. Thank you Amazon Prime!

This online shopping felt quite indulgent until I learned about a trick Amazon had up their sleeve called Amazon Smile. Now every time I hit that order button, .5% of my purchase is funding the search for cures for pediatric cancer research. This may not seem like a life-changing amount, but if we put all of our .5%’s together, they will add up.

Now, when I’m debating the great question of life – “Is this a need or a want?” – I go ahead and decide to #TreatYoSelf because my shopping is ending children’s cancer.

Is there an app? No, there isn’t an Amazon Smile app, but if you visit smile.amazon.com on your mobile device and click on the square button with the arrow at the bottom of your screen, you can add it to your home screen. This makes it super easy to access.
