Job Summary

We’re currently seeking a National Director of Donor Development to join our Development Team. Reporting to the SVP of Development & Communications, the National Director will lead the development, implementation and management of the organization’s Donor Development strategy, including major gifts, planned giving, and foundation grants.

The Director will identify, cultivate and steward new and prospective donors with an eye towards long term engagement and support. The Director will lead the Donor Development staff team and work closely with the Executive Leadership team to diversify and grow the organization’s revenue streams and identify and engage new donors and funding partners.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive annual Donor Development fundraising strategy to secure a minimum of $2.5M in restricted and unrestricted giving through major and annual giving, family and corporate foundations, planned giving, and direct appeals.
  • Manage a portfolio of 150-200 individual donors giving a minimum of $5,000 annually.
  • Build strong long term relationships with top donors and create opportunities for deepened engagement through the development of cultivation plans for our top 20 donors.
  • Personally identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors with six to seven figure giving capacity.
  • Build and cultivate a list of donor prospects to move along the continuum towards a gift in 12-18 months.
  • Build and maintain strong foundation and co-funding relationships; oversee grant writing staff, cycles and reporting.
  • Effectively manage and guide the Donor Development team to meet their position/professional objectives in a positive, productive and collaborative environment.
  • Represent CureSearch at events and speaking engagements; develop stewardship events and programs geared toward educating donors about our mission and the impact they can make.
  • Work with our Communications Team to ensure funding partners are appropriately recognized and funding opportunities are clearly and effectively presented to prospective donors.
  • Work closely with the leadership team and Board of Directors to create and implement plans to meet the organization’s short and long-term fundraising goals.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive annual budget and, on a monthly basis, assess, track, report and forecast expenses, and revenue.
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data to determine effectiveness of development plans and strategies; use relevant data to adjust plans as appropriate.
  • Maximize technology and fundraising systems to achieve development objectives; maintain thorough documentation of activity using the Raiser’s Edge database.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in donor development including planned giving, major gifts, and foundation giving.
  • Proven ability to solicit six to seven figure individual gifts.
  • A successful track record of identifying and cultivating donors through multiple channels.
  • Experience identifying giving opportunities and thinking creatively to establish matches between donors and funding priorities.
  • Experience conducting prospect research and qualifying constituents to target highest potential donors.
  • Experience in developing donor-centric cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Proven success in managing positive working relationships with boards, volunteers, and colleagues to meet organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing data, preparing concise summaries and making sound recommendations.
  • Proficiency with donor related CRM database systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates.
  • Ability to imagine, research, develop and coherently propose new ways to engage prospective and current donors.
  • Ability to work effectively and confidently with senior leaders and high net worth individuals and families.
  • Exceptional communication skills; writes and speaks with clarity and purpose to internal and external constituencies.
  • Solid graphic presentation skills; able to produce compelling donor communications and collateral as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a high degree of flexibility and initiative.
  • Strong work ethic, confidentiality, evidence of good judgment, and integrity and ability to foster trust.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree (in fundraising or communication preferred).
  • Experience working for a nonprofit that supports children’s causes is a plus.

Work Hours, Travel & Other Requirements

  • Travel is required approximately 20 percent of the time.
  • Occasional nights and weekends may be required.
  • You must be able to lift 25 – 30 lbs and perform basic event preparations (e.g., setting up and breaking down equipment, folding tables, moving boxes, setting up displays, etc).
  • While performing the responsibilities and duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, stoop or kneel. Some of the work of this position may be performed outdoors in varying climates and conditions.
  • Telephone, computer and other communication systems and technologies will be used regularly during the work day
