Monica Sudra crosses the pond to raise funds for children’s cancer research

New York – On Nov. 3, when Monica Sudra carries the flag of her native United Kingdom through New York’s Central Park, she will also be parading for a cause she holds dear. As one of 50,000 runners in the Nov. 5 New York City Marathon, Monica has been selected to represent the U.K. in the Parade of Nations kicking off marathon weekend. And in addition to cultural pride, she’s also excited to bring awareness to children’s cancer research.

“I am extremely proud to be a flag bearer for my country, and this prestigious opportunity is also great for highlighting the amazing work that CureSearch does,” she says.

Monica, 32, is running in the Big Apple’s big race as part of the CureSearch Challenge, a fundraising initiative designed to support and encourage athletes who have devoted their physical endeavors to fighting children’s cancer.

A pharmacist and senior medical advisor at a pharmaceutical firm, Monica’s life-long interest in science and medicine has bolstered her love of running for a cause. In 2015, she completed London’s Royal Parks Half Marathon (her first big run) for a local children’s hospital. In 2016 and 2017, she ran the same 13.1-mile event for Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support, which provides resources for cancer patients and their loved ones. She completed the London Marathon to benefit a leukemia charity in April 2016.

“In years gone by, I have known many children living and battling against cancer. Some of my dear family members are also going through this,” she says. “But every child deserves a fighting chance. To be able to run and raise money for CureSearch, a charity that does so much to end children’s cancer by driving targeted and innovative research, is both inspiring and humbling.”

Monica has personally raised $1,349 for CureSearch to date, nearly 54 percent of her $2,500 goal. Together, she and other members of the New York City Marathon’s CureSearch team have raised more than $4,000 for children’s cancer research.

“Research by companies in the areas of science and medicine is incredible,” she adds. “The contributions of charities like CureSearch and everyday people are fundamental to this. They make an enormous difference.”
