How the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Can Help End Children’s Cancer

Written by Mallory Zarate, Manager, Strategic Partnerships.

“How is making something gold and posting it online going to help end children’s cancer?”

If you’ve asked yourself this question in regards to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which is in September, then we have the answer for you.

Think back to 2014, when the ALS ice bucket challenge went viral. It was a common topic of conversation everywhere you turned. Sports teams like the Chicago Cubs and celebrities like Oprah all took part in it.

Two years later we are now seeing that not only did this campaign flood your social media channels, putting all eyes on ALS, it also raised millions of dollars for ALS research. It also led to the identifications of a gene related to ALS that could provide clues to help understand and treat the disease. You can read more about the impact here.

This is the type of impact we hope to see come out of a September when everything is turned gold for the kids battling cancer.

When you #MakeItGoldForKids, take a picture of it and share it with your online following, you are making a public statement. You are telling your community that kids are being diagnosed with cancer, you care and you want to see something done so that every child can one day be guaranteed a cure.

Your participation is also creating a new avenue for awareness because you are educating your following about children’s cancer and how they can get involved and make an impact.

Here’s how it works:

1) You take a photo of yourself wearing gold and post it to social media with the #MakeItGoldForKids. 2) Two of your followers decide they want to #MakeItGoldForKids. 3) Two of each of their followers decide to follow your lead and #MakeItGoldForKids too. 4) Your individual action has now created a movement that will continue to spread and #MakeItGoldForKids nationwide!

Sounds pretty easy, right?

It is, and that’s why we’re asking you to get inspired by the power of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and use that inspiration to #MakeItGoldForKids this September.
