Bethesda, Md – Illinois-based Berkot’s Super Foods is more than just your neighborhood-friendly grocery store – it’s a family-operated and owned business that cares about children and the community. This summer, it was the perfect location for a father and daughter duo to raise thousands of dollars to help drive research that accelerates the search for children’s cancer cures.

“After my daughter Bailee had finished her treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and things were getting back to normal, my family was looking for an organization to support to help pay forward for all the support we had received,” said Jeff Schingel, who is a Buyer at Berkot’s. “We found CureSearch and knew that this would be right group to support. The focus on children’s cancer and their treatments and cure was what we wanted to support. The family-owned Berkot’s stores where I work at are the ideal partners for the sale of the cutouts, as it fits in perfectly with the owner’s support of children and community events. Each year the cashiers and customer service managers at the stores have driven this promotion to be more successful than the last. We look forward every year to try and raise more funds than the year before.”

From June to July 2016, across fifteen Berkot’s locations across Illinois, Jeff and his daughter Bailee raised $9,029.97 to support their Chicago CureSearch Walk team, Thumbs Down to Cancer. A total of $6,279.97 was raised through CureCards and a silent raffle for a smoker/grill raised $2,750.00.

“We are very fortunate to have the support of the Schingel family and Berkot’s,” said Erin Richey, CureSearch Manager of Signature Events. “Since they have been involved with CureSearch, not only have they raised thousands of dollars, but they have also created an awareness of the importance of funding children’s cancer research and our innovative approach to driving results. We are so grateful to the Schingel family and Berkot’s.”
